Jessica Pegula might shine even brighter in the next season. After an impressive 2024, Pegula is doubling up her potential for next season highlighting chances for more Major titles. A former pro is now reflecting on her incredible journey. And she also explains why she thinks Pegula could be a real tough contender for the players in Melbourne.
Former German tennis star, Andrea Petkovic expressed great hope for Jessica Pegula regarding her run at the Melbourne Major next month. This WTA star had an impressive year. She reached the Miami Open quarterfinals, the Charleston Open semifinals, and won the Canadian Open. Pegula also reached the US Open’s finals. Her performance throughout the season showcased her talent and skill in the sport. Now, Petkovic thinks that Pegula will have a great start in Melbourne. This former German player made an appearance in the Rennae Stubbs podcast and revealed her opinion.
“So the other people we think we should keep an eye on is Jess Pegula. Ah, I really think she broke through a barrier with the final at the US Open and I do think as I have played her many times. Yes, so the Australian Open is the best possible surface for her,” said Petkovic. Her words highlighted the fact that Pegula has a strong forte on grass courts, which might help her perform great in the Melbourne major. Although Pegula couldn’t win the trophy in Flushing Meadows, her performance against Aryna Sabalenka garnered much appreciation highlighting her increasing chances to win a Majors.

While Petkovic offered great positivity for Jessica Pegula, she also raised the problem of jet lags. Petkovic highlighted how traveling from America and Europe to Australia might impact the physicality of WTA stars including Pegula negatively affecting their performance.

Andrea Petkovic reveals the challenge of WTA stars during the 2025 Melbourne Major
The former player had an interesting thought when she heard about Jessica Pegula‘s attendance at the 2025 Brisbane International. Speaking with Rennae Stubbs on her podcast, Petkovic said, “I fly out on the 25th and I land 27th in the morning and I have to work 2 hours later and I’m on broadcasting and I don’t need to adjust to no time zone. I don’t need to be there a week earlier. So, I’m flying in the last possible moment possible just to make it and give myself 3-4 hours period in case something get riot. But these girls, they need to get adjust to the time zones. They’re trying also to have Christmas at home possibly, So, this is going to cut it very close.”

Petkovic highlighted how traveling to a different continent and also in a different temperature might impact the player’s physicality. Nevertheless, Petkovic’s analysis shows a better future for Jessica Pegula. Given Pegula’s record, she might do it. However, to see how that goes on, we’ll need to wait for the 2025.
