Jon Bernthal’s Acclaimed ‘King Richard’ Performance Gets a Cheeky Dig from Serena Williams’ Childhood Coach (EXCLUSIVE)

The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena Williams took the world by storm throughout their time as professional players. However, behind their success was a man who stayed behind the limelight and did everything he could to ensure that their children touched the sky with glory, their father, Richard Williams. The movie King Richard’, was an absolute tribute to him which showed the struggles that a father went through. This movie had all the characters that played a crucial role in the development of the  Williams sisters including the likes of Rick Macci and others.

The role of Rick Macci was played by popular actor Jon Bernthal. However, reflecting on the same, the childhood coach of Serena Williams came ahead and sparked his honest opinion while making a bold statement.

In an exclusive ES Fancast interview, Rick Macci shared his thoughts post the portrayal of his character in ‘King Richard’ by Jon Bernthal. The former coach of Serena Williams expressed a unique perspective. While acknowledging Bernthal’s commendable performance, Macci humbly revealed a personal thought. He mentioned that, given the chance, he believed he could have depicted himself even better than how he was presented on screen.

Macci mentioned that they talked a lot before the movie, with Bernthal reading the book and studying quotes while he watched lots of videos. He was amazed to see all that video footage in the movie credits. While watching his role being played by Bernthal himself, he revealed that he did not know that he was all wired up and plugged.

“Well I wish they would asked me I think I could have played myself even better but John did a great job you know we talked a lot before the movie he read the book he read all the quotes and I watched Richard had so much video it was amazing and you saw that in the credits at the end of the movie all that video so Bernthal did a great job I didn’t know I was at like wired up and plugged,” said Macci while talking about how his role was played.

Thus, Jon Bernthal, who played the role of Rick Macci in the movie ‘King Richard’ got praise from the man himself after he acknowledged that he played a perfect role in the movie. However, he also added that had he been given a chance, he would have done better.

However, the former coach of the Williams sisters also talked about the role that Will Smith played in the movie. Interstingly, Smith played the role of the man himself Richard Williams. Macci praised Smith and suggested that there was no one better to have played the role of Richard Williams than Smith himself.

In the same interview, Macci further went ahead to talk about the role that Will Smith played in the movie, the role of Serena Williams’ father, Richard Williams. He suggested that Will Smith played the role of Richard even better than the man himself. This further assured him that the movie was going to perform well at the Oscars and bag the awards.

The little attention to detail that Smith paid in the movie intrigued Rick Macci and he thus asserted his opinion. Thus, the movie ‘King Richard’ was one of a kind where every individual paid their level best effort and pulled off a banger. Even the legends of the game had nothing but appreciation for them.
