The setbacks continue for top ranked women’s singles players on the grass court season as Karolina Pliskova was defeated by Camila Giorgi in her opening round match at WTA Eastbourne International in three sets.
Pliskova, who has been struggling to find top gear this season, was defeated in the French Open second round by Sloane Stephens. Even at the grass-court event in Berlin, the Czech lost in the opening round against Jessica Pegula.

If we take a look at the win-loss record of Pliskova this year, it stands at 15-12. Her best performance came at the Italian Open, where she lost in the final to Iga Swiatek. The former world number one is yet to win a title this year on the WTA tour.
Karolina Pliskova drops out of top-10 for the first time since 2016
Throughout her career, Karolina Pliskova has been a consistent performer both at the slams and other WTA tournaments. However, she has failed to reach the quarter-final stage at the last five grand slam events and won a tour title way back in January last year.
As a result of her lack of consistency over the past year or so, Pliskova will drop out of top-10 in the women’s singles rankings for the first time since her debut in 2016. She holds the record for one of the longest top-10 streaks by a WTA player.

The Czech player remained inside the top-10 for a total of 230 weeks. It was the second-longest streak by active women’s singles player. The longest top-10 record is being held by the defending Wimbledon champion Simona Halep.
Even though Pliskova can bounce back at SW19, she will have intense competition from younger players as they found a way to go past her at several tournaments since 2020.

Coached by Sascha Bajin, the Czech player was persistent enough to reach the quarters and semis at major tournaments but fumbled on capitalizing big opportunities.
Currently, Elina Svitolina is maintaining her top-10 record at 194 weeks and counting. At the Eastbourne International, the Ukrainian edged past Paula Badosa in a three-set thriller. Both Svitolina and Pliskova were always consistent at slams but failed to make it big.
With the rise of younger players like Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek and Maria Sakkari, it will be even difficult for Karolina Pliskova to stage a solid comeback on the WTA tour this year.
