“Know How to Manage it”: Ashleigh Barty Gives Her Injury Update After Retiring Mid-Match Against Coco Gauff at Italian Open 2021

World No.1 Ashleigh Barty suffered a major setback at the Italian Open 2021. The Australian was leading quite comfortably in her match against Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals but suffered an injury in her right arm. As a result, she retired mid-match giving Gauff an easy walkover. The final scoreline at that time was 6-4, 2-1.
In the post-match presentation, Ashleigh Barty gave updates about her injury. She mentioned that she has had such kind of injuries in her arm since she was 15-16 years old.

“I mean, it’s an injury that began when I was quite young- when I was 15 or 16 years old. I mean, it pops up every now and again and I think the conditions today certainly didn’t help that,” said Barty in the interview.
Barty reflected that it is not the first time that she is facing issues with her arm. She mentioned that the conditions also didn’t help her so that she could play with an injured arm. Interestingly, it is the first time when Barty retired during a match since the WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg 2018.

When Barty retired, there were speculations whether she would be able to play at the French Open 2021 or not. However, she emphasized that her team knows how to deal with the injury. She also believes that it was the right call to retire today and has no regrets about that decision.
“We’re confident. We know how to manage it, so we just kind of move on, and know that the right decision was made today,” added the World No.1 player.

Roland Garros 2021 is two weeks away and fans hope that Barty will be fit and fine by then. The Australian has played beautifully on clay this season and has won the Stuttgart Open 2021. She also ended up as the runner-up of the Mutua Madrid Open 2021.
