Renowned American tennis player Chris Evert is one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport. Notably, she achieved legendary status after winning 7 French Open titles at Roland Garros, a record that still stands to this day in the women’s circuit.
After her retirement in 1989, she gave birth to her first child in 1991. Back in the day, she talked about the bizarre situation she faced during the birth of her first child.

Chris Evert opened up about the media attention she received during the birth of her first child
During an interview in 1992, Evert talked about giving birth to her first baby boy Alexander James in a public hospital. Evert said, “It was kind of sticky. It was a public hospital, and it has excellent labor and delivery facilities, but the downside was that it was public and every Tom, Dick and Harry could walk right in.“

“The press wanted pictures the first two or three days, but Andy and I wanted to wait four or five weeks. So we had a security guy there to keep them out,” she further said.
Later, Evert told a funny story about her son’s pictures in both weekly magazines and in the passport. “They shot him from the front and the side. He looks like he belongs in prison. He had to get a passport because he’s had to travel. He’s already been to Japan, Aspen and L.A. He’s a great traveler; as soon as the engines start to roar, he falls asleep,” Evert said.
It is worth noting that Evert married skier Andy Mill in 1988 and they have three sons together. Moreover, the birth of her first son took place at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale. Incidentally, this was the same place she was born as well.

Did Evert end her career too early?
In 1989, Evert retired from tennis at the age of just 34. Many at that time believed that Evert retired too early, whereas her biggest rival and friend Martina Navratilova played till 50.

Before her retirement, Evert won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, and many consider her one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Moreover, she won 157 singles titles in her career, the second most ever behind Navratilova.
Evert had a fantastic career as a tennis player and undoubtedly had one of the best rivalries with Navratilova which spanned for nearly 15 years.
