Mirra Andreeva, who is currently enjoying her victories in the Madrid Open, has not had a great start to the season. The 2023 WTA Newcomer of the Year suffered from injuries and had to withdraw from important tournaments this year. However, Andy Roddick has her back. In his latest podcast, Roddick, impressed by Andreeva’s “ability to compete,” expressed his support for the 16-year-old.

Following a challenging time at Indian Wells 2024, Mirra Andreeva made the painful choice to retire from the 2024 Miami Open. She withdrew due to arm tendinitis, and previously the Qatar Open due to her wrist injury. However, after facing a quarterfinal exit from the Open de Rouen, Andreeva is back at the Madrid Open once again.

And waving away all her back-to-back tough times during this season, Roddick mentioned, “But I think I like Andreeva; I love her ability to compete. I like the way, normally, at 16 years old, you get extended in the matches you start getting tired. She’s like a robot; she just doesn’t get tired.”

Last year, after getting a wild card into the Madrid Open, Andreeva managed to reach the fourth round of the tournament. And continuing her record in the tournament, she has already bagged two victories in the Madrid Open this season so far. And referring to that, Roddick continued, “I think I actually like Andreeva in this match; she obviously likes these conditions and made a run there last year.”

Mirra Andreeva herself acknowledged her recent performance after her latest victory. Moreover, she also shared her insights on what helped her win back-to-back matches in Madrid this year.

After her latest victory over Taylor Townsend in the Madrid Open, Mirra Andreeva stated, “I feel like Madrid is my place of power.” She explained how watching her previous matches helped her realize what was missing in her game. And soon, she found it. “Last year, I came here hoping that I would win some matches with some kind of miracle. I was hoping that maybe my opponents will make the match turn my way,” Andreeva said in an interview.

However, this year it is different. The young Russian sensation now hopes to win the match by doing everything herself. And her latest victory further instilled this belief in her. Apart from focusing on her physical fitness, Mirra Andreeva has also made some changes to her coaching setup as well. And as she navigates the challenges on and off the court, support from people like Andy Roddick will surely help her emerge victorious!
