Serena Williams has come under the radar for doping quite a few times in the past. However, there was a huge uproar when her fans demanded an apology from Chris Evert and Pam Shriver for what they had said. They both indirectly indicated Williams’ intake of banned substances.

In 2014, Williams was dizzy in her doubles match with her partner and this led to many people questioning her performance. In the process, they made quite a few speculations as well.

Chris Evert faced the brunt of Serena Williams fans for an indicative doping comment

The 18-time Grand Slam champion is a huge admirer of Serena Williams. However, that did not stop her from making speculations about her on-court behavior. Williams was dizzy on the court and could not hit a ball properly.

During the post-match analysis, Evert said, “Is it a virus? Is it something unintentional or intentional in her system that they may drug test for?”

Moreover, ESPN’s Pam Shriver said, “It’s almost like she has taken something that makes her feel dizzy, disoriented, and she cannot reach up and strike the ball.”

These comments made Williams’ fans furious. They accused two of them of making irresponsible comments and asked them to issue a formal apology.

Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova’s doping issues

Both the players have had some tough rivalry with the 23-time Grand Slam champion. In 2020, the Russian player, Maria Sharapova was banned because of testing positive for doping. And this year, after her run at the US Open, Simona Halep too was under the spotlight because she also tested positive for a banned substance.

However, she has denied all such claims. Her fans are also vouching for her to stay strong and make a big comeback. Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou was working with Halep and he has shown his full support for the Romanian player.
