“Managed to escape”: Garbine Muguruza on Facing World No.200 Hontama and Reaching 4th Semifinal of 2021 at WTA Chicago

World No.9 Garbine Muguruza recently defeated World No.200 Mai Hontama in the quarters of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic 2021. The Spaniard looked quite comfortable throughout the match and thrashed her opponent in straight sets. The final scoreline of the match was 6-3, 6-2.

With this victory, Garbine Muguruza has advanced to the semi-finals of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic 2021. Interestingly, she is yet to drop a set at the tournament.

“Was a tricky match”- Garbine Muguruza

In the post-match interview, Muguruza admitted that even though she won the match in straight sets, it was quite a tough and tricky match for her. She even praised her opponent, Mai Hontama, and believes that she must have gained huge confidence after her incredible run at the WTA Chicago 2021.

“It was a tough match because I didn’t know much about her. I think she has a lot of confidence right now, it was a tricky match,” said Muguruza to the press.

Muguruza feels cheerful after entering her fourth semi-final of the season

In the same interview, Muguruza accepted the fact that she barely managed to escape in both the sets. She highlighted that although she leading comfortably, Hontama continued to show her fighting spirit right till the end of the match. Whatever be the case, the Spaniard seems happy after her advancing through to her fourth semi-final of the season.

“But I’m very happy. I think that the first set was key, because it was very tough. She came back from 4-0 down, and managed to make the end of the first set very tight. Then in the second set, I managed to escape and get an early break, so very happy to be able to close the match in two sets,” concluded the former World No.1 player.

After this, Garbine Muguruza will face Marketa Vondrousova in the semi-finals of the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic 2021. Will she be able to conquer Chicago this year?
