What was even sad both for her fans and herself was her withdrawal from probably the best year-ending tournament. However, the same heartbreaking news came in as a positive sign for Greek sensation Maria Sakkari.

In a recent Instagram post, Karolina Muchova shared the news of her withdrawal from the WTA Finals in Cancun, Mexico. In the post, she expressed deep disappointment at the situation. Her absence opens the door for Maria Sakkari who is currently 9th in the WTA race. With this, she has secured her third consecutive qualification for the tournament.

Muchova, along with her team and medical advisors, tried every single option that could have allowed her to take part in the tournament. However, the recovery time exceeded their expectations. Thus, Muchova was left with no choice but to make the decision to withdraw. Despite the disappointment, she came forward and thanked her fans for showing her support in the tough times.

“I am heartbroken to announce that I will miss my first WTA Finals in Cancun. Together with the team and doctors we tried everything till the last moments to resolve my wrist injury. Unfortunately, the time needed for the recovery is longer than we would’ve hoped for and therefore I had to make this unpleasant decision. I greatly appreciate the support of all the fans,” wrote Sakkari in her latest Instagram post.

Thus, Muchova’s sudden withdrawal from the tournament opened the doors for Sakkari to take part in her 3rd consecutive WTA Finals. That being said, Sakkari will be going into the tournament with a great chance to win.

With Muchova backing out, Maria Sakkari will be going into the WTA Finals with strong momentum. Coming into the tournament, she will look to make an instant impact after her recent victory at the Guadalajara. What adds a sweeter taste to her victory was that the event was held in Mexico, where the current WTA Finals are supposed to be held.
