When Serena Williams famously announced her pregnancy last year at the Met Gala, many wondered if 2024 would fall short. As far as her outfit was concerned, it fell flat for many, reminding fans of “tin foil”. Who knows if even Anna Wintour approved the Balenciaga gown? But as usual, her husband was her no. 1 fan, looking at his wife with stars in his eyes.

Gracing the Met Museum since the early 2000s, Serena Williams has appeared both with and sans Alexis Ohanian. This year, her sister Venus also dazzled on the red carpet, while Ohanian admired Serena from afar. On a video of her walking on the red carpet, he couldn’t stop himself from adding, “🤩”.

This year’s gold extravaganza was inspired by “look 52 from the house’s 51st couture collection—presented in 2022 and echoing pieces from the Balenciaga archives,” per Vogue. It reportedly took 150 hours for pattern-making and crafting the outfit from 25 meters of gold foil-laminated taffeta, sourced from Italy. But to fans, it looks nothing more than “shiny foil-like sheets.” There is a buzz going on among fans that Serena Williams’ stylist might missed the whole understanding of the Met Gala theme this year.

The golden piece had two trains extending down to the floor, one from behind her shoulder and the other from a side leg slit. She added a few black accessories, such as opera-length gloves, sheer tights, and stiletto shoes, to complete her look. Ohanian, who has gone far and above for his wife before, such as collecting rare memorabilia, is ever the devoted husband.

But even Ohanian looks at her fondly, Williams did not receive a similar reception from her fans. While each year celebrities only loosely interpret the theme, this year’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” with the dress code ‘The Garden of Time’ (based on a short story by J.G. Ballard) did not seem to resonate with this tennis star’s outfit.

Serena Williams fails to impress fans with her Met Gala look

No matter how much effort was put into planning the Queen of the Court’s attire, her fans couldn’t appreciate her outfit considering the theme of this year’s Met Gala. After Pop Base posted a video of Williams and ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ actress Michelle Yeoh, viewers weighed in on their attire. The most popular comment on the attire seemed to be about it reminding viewers of tin foil.

Following the theme, some suggested that Yeoh and Williams probably cleared out their kitchen drawers of the foil and they should take a look. Some suggested they cleared out Costco by bulk ordering and used it for their dresses. Fans also felt that the two missed out on making an even bigger statement while wearing such shiny dresses.

One fan simply found the outfits tragic and couldn’t believe what they were witnessing. For fans, the outfit was a big miss, but Williams’ husband was left starry-eyed when he witnessed his wife walk the red carpet. Which side of the argument are you on?
