Miami Open: Danielle Collins vs Ekaterina Alexandrova; Preview, Head-to-Head, Prediction

The semifinal of the Miami Open has pit Danielle Collins against Ekaterina Alexandrova as both players aim to end their Sunshine Doubles stint with a better result after the Indian Wells Masters. Both have shown dominant performances over their opponents in Miami, regardless of what will transpire for the rest of their years. Now, they will face each other in the ultimate match-up.

Collins is in the midst of her final year as a tennis player and aims to go out of Miami on a high note. Alexandrova, meanwhile, is on her best Miami Open stint and is looking to go even further and claim glory.

Collins began 2024 in Brisbane, where she lost in the second round, with a first round exit following in the Hobart International. In the Australian Open, Collins lost 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 to Iga Swiatek and announced that she will retire after 2024. In Abu Dhabi, Collins cleared two qualifiers and one main draw to then be eliminated by Elena Rybakina in round 2. She would reach the quarterfinal in the Qatar Open, which was followed by a withdrawal from Dubai.

The ATX Open would have her exit in the quarterfinal due to injury, which would then be followed by a second round exit in the Indian Wells against Swiatek. In Miami, she beat Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2 to now face Alexandrova.

A first round exit against Julia Riera would begin Alexandrova’s 2024 season at the Brisbane International. A similar fate awaited her at the Australian Open against Laura Seigemund. She, however, found a fantastic run to the final at the Linz Open, but lost 2-6, 3-6 to Jelena Ostapenko. In the Qatar Open, she would be eliminated  Swiatek in the round of 16.

Unfortunately, two first round eliminations would follow her in the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Indian Wells Masters. She has turned her luck around in Miami, as she beat Swiatek and Jessica Pegula back-to-back, in the round of 16 and quarterfinal respectively. On her way to the semifinal, she has only dropped one set.

Collins vs Alexandrova: Head-to-Head

Collins and Alexandrova will trade blows in the Miami Open for the first time in their careers. While both players are seasoned professionals, their paths will cross for the first time and both will have to employ their best strategies to ensure that they emerge victorious.

Prediction: Collins to win in front of the home crowd

Both players have shown complete and utter dominance against their foes in the last two weeks. They have also displayed their mastery of the hard court in Miami. Collins may have a higher chance of winning the bout with the home-court advantage and fewer unforced errors.

Both are, nevertheless, performing incredibly well this week. Collins’ level appears to be slightly higher. Her track record at the arena is remarkable, and making it to the final would be the cherry on top. Given her performance in the previous rounds, the American can likely expect to move further.
