Venus Williams is one player who knows what is like to be discriminated against. She has encountered many instances of racial discrimination but never relented. Along with her sister, Serena Williams, she boycotted the Indian Wells Masters after they were racially abused by the crowd. However, her indomitable spirit to keep on fighting despite adversity comes from many figures who have inspired her throughout her life. One such figure is an American artist who fought back against discrimination, just like her.
Nina Simone, an American singer-songwriter, has a guaranteed spot in Venus Williams’ heart. Her work in the field of civil rights has inspired many to use their position to speak up for their rights. The elder Williams sister is one of the many who were enchanted by her.
