Victoria Azarenka survived a tough match in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open 2021. Facing Ekaterina Alexandrova, she lost the second set but made an incredible comeback in the decider. The final scoreline of the match was 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. Even though the Belarusian is not in her best form at the moment, she proved that she can still win matches on of her not-so-good days.

On the other hand, Jessica Pegula enjoyed a comfortable victory in her first match of the Mutua Madrid Open 2021. She crushed Sorana Cirstea in straight sets and began her clay-court campaign in style.
While Pegula will come prepared for the powerful forehand of Azarenka, the Belarusian will have to find a way to respond to the cheeky drops of Pegula. The American has been phenomenal with them in the recent past and will like to carry her momentum in her next match as well.

World No.15 Azarenka has only met Pegula once in her career so far. Interestingly, that match was at the Australian Open 2021 where Pegula stunned Azarenka by defeating her in straight sets. As a result, Pegula leads the head-to-head battle as of now.
Their face-off at the Mutua Madrid Open 2021 will be their first-ever encounter on clay. It is a golden chance for Azarenka to settle her scores with Pegula.
