‘My Mum Stopped Watching..’- Victoria Azarenka’s Weird Superstition on Her Parents Showing Up to Matches

While amassing 21 WTA Tour singles titles, including two Grand Slams, Victoria Azarenka has also reached the world No. 1 ranking during her competitive journey. However, despite her remarkable on-court accolades, the Belarusian tennis player’s parents have only been to a few of her matches. Do you know why?

The 34-year-old WTA superstar recently opened up about how it’s the ‘best thing’ to have her parents come and spend time with her son. Though they make time for their grandchild, Azarenka also disclosed the reason why her parents never come to watch her competitive games on the tour.

In a conversation at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, the Belarusian tennis player was recently asked about her experience traveling to tournaments with her parents and son. Victoria Azarenka answered by saying, “Oh, it’s amazing, it’s just the best thing to have my parents come and spend time with Leo. It’s always the best. They never come to my matches. So the tennis is, I guess, not that important.”

The 2-time singles Grand Slam champion also revealed that her mother stopped watching her games after she claimed the top ranking for the first time in 2012. She said, “Well, my mum stopped watching my matches when I became No. 1. And my dad’s been to a few matches. He was actually there in Dubai here, and it was his first time ever watching me play a professional match.”

As her mother stopped watching her games once she rose to the top echelons, Azarenka’s father was told not to attend her games following his visit to Dubai in 2010. Azarenka said, “I think it was in 2010, I lost the set and he gave me a thumbs up and I was like, ‘Okay, I’m not sure you should come again.'”

Even though they have only been to a handful of games, Azarenka’s parents are there alongside their tennis star during her campaign at this season’s Dubai Championships. The official page of the WTA 1000 tournament tweeted, “Former world No1
@vika7 shares her Dubai experience and the joy of bringing her family to this amazing city! 🎾🌴”
