17 years long career with 24 titles including 2 Grand Slam triumphs. The 32-year-old Romanian tennis player, Simona Halep was once a force to reckon with. Despite all these successes over the years, the former number one’s career is in doubt at the moment. She’s now fighting to prove her innocence over the doping saga. There has been a series of events that kicked off in the last few months and recently her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou took all the responsibility for her woes. Patrick Mouratoglou had started working with the Romanian icon just 6 months before the doping incident. He has worked with Serena Williams for almost a decade. The 53YO has been a staunch supporter of Halep since the news broke out and only a month back he revealed that his team had provided Halep with an allegedly contaminated collagen supplement which led to her positive test result.

Simona Halep’s reaction to the late admission of her coach

In October 2022, shock waves went through the tennis world when it was announced that Simona Halep would be provisionally suspended by ITIA over the intake of a banned substance. Then in September, Halep was suspended by the ITIA tribunal for 48 months. The tribunal ruled her with two intentional violations of anti-doping rules. But now she has lodged an appeal with CAS to get this overturned. Since, day one she has been trying to prove that she didn’t take those substances intentionally, and now suddenly Mouratoglou’s revelation sparked a new controversy in this case.

Simona Halep recently gave an interview with ‘Euronews Romania’. She was looking quite disheartened with the turn of events in the recent past. She said, “It’s true that he went out. I wish he could have done that a little bit earlier. I have stopped working with the academy since a while already. So I always trusted this and my trust is broken a little bit right now. And in the future, I don’t know how it’s going to be if I can trust again..”

If the ban is held then Simona Halep will not be able to take part in any events till October 2026. She’ll turn 35 years till then. To make a comeback after such a long gap at that age won’t be a cakewalk and she knows it very well. However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
