Naomi Osaka started her new season at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 tournament, which is considered as a warm-up tournament for the Australian Open. She reached the semifinal of the event but withdrew due to fitness concerns.

After that, her progress in the Australian Open was halted by the American Amanda Anisimova in a three-setter thriller. Her third round exit in the Slam she won last year has resulted in her dropping to No. 85 in the WTA rankings.
