After a second-round exit at the Citi Open, the four-time Grand Slam champion featured in the National Bank Open. Playing in her first-round match against Estonian Kaia Kanepi, the 24-year-old seemed uncomfortable at the beginning and later retired, giving a walkover to her opponent. Notably, the Japanese sustained a back injury and left the court in tears. This could be a major setback for Osaka, who was aiming to regain her form and fitness before the US Open.
Earlier this year, she bowed out of the French Open 2022 after a first-round defeat to Amanda Anisimova. Further, the 24-year-old had to skip the Wimbledon Championships 2022 due to an Achilles injury.
