‘Never Say Never’- Months After Announcing Retirement From Doubles, Venus Williams Creates Buzz With a Cryptic Message About Wimbledon Mixed Game

Seven-time grand slam champion Venus Williams loves to interact with her fans. She likes to keep her followers updated on her activities and practice sessions on a regular basis through her social media handles. The fans, of course, eagerly wait to know the whereabouts of their favorite star, and what she is up to. Venus made an inspiring comeback to the court earlier this year at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. She won her first competitive singles match in a year and a half when she overcame compatriot Katie Volynets in the opening round of the tournament, before falling short to Lin Zhu of China in the following round.

However, her injury woes continued as she was forced to withdraw from this year’s Australian Open, where she was slated to participate as a wild card entrant. She has been out of the tour ever since. But now, with Wimbledon knocking on the door, the elder Williams has kept all her fans and the tennis world guessing about a possible mixed-doubles appearance at the All England Club.

In her latest Q&A session with fans, which she conducts from her fashion brand EleVen’s Instagram page, the 5-time Wimbledon singles winner shared her thoughts on the possibility of returning to mixed doubles action. She was asked by a follower whether she intends to play mixed doubles at the upcoming Wimbledon or not.

While answering this on an Instagram story, she said, “I guess never say never, because when I enter mixed it’s kind of a big surprise.. But yes, I’m retired from doubles.”

The former world number 1 will be making a return to competitive tennis after 5 months of absence at the Libema Open in the Netherlands starting June 12. Currently ranked 701 in the WTA rankings, she has been given a wild card spot at the tournament. It will be exciting to see her back in action on a grass court, a surface where she has been the most successful in her career. Although she will not be eligible for direct entry at Wimbledon due to her rankings, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if she gets a wild card entry at the All England Club, a place where she has lifted the women’s singles championship trophy 5 times.
