The ongoing Citi Open has produced some really fine tennis, especially in the women’s section of the draw. Coco Gauff has been cruising past her opponents with ease after tweaking her playing style. She now takes on Maria Sakkari in the final to claim the biggest title of her brief career so far.

Entering the final, both players did not have much separating them. However, Gauff was pretty much ruthless in her previous rounds, whereas Sakkari needed to edge out in some close encounters. The American started the final in a similar manner, thereby inching closer to the title.

Coco Gauff off to a flyer in the Citi Open final

Within no time, Gauff was 3-0 up in the opening set while conceding only four points in those three games. The Greek, on the other hand, woke up after facing break points in the following game. An uncharacteristic service game from Gauff allowed Sakkari to get back in the set.

However, Sakkari’s comeback was short-lived. She was instantly broken back and Gauff took firm control of the set again. The American went on to seal the opener 6-2 and make a statement of the highest order.

Glory for Gauff in Washington

Gauff was off to a shaky start in the second set as she lost her serve in the very first game. Despite trailing 0-2 in the second set, she did not lose her footing. She leveled the scores pretty quickly and did not get affected by the early break. There were a couple of mini-halts in the match owing to fans’ distress. However, nothing could interrupt the American’s momentum.

Sakkari capitulated further as she sprayed a few double faults. She could not deal with Gauff’s athleticism and eventually succumbed in the second set. Her poor record in the finals continue as she registered her seventh defeat in eight finals. Gauff, on the other hand, adds her fourth WTA title to the cabinet with 6-2, 6-3 win over the Greek.
