‘No Racket Smashing’ – Serena Williams Says Her Daughter’s Presence During Her Match in Toronto Affected Her

Serena Williams shares a close bond with her daughter, Olympia. The mother-daughter duo is very active on social media, often sharing their adorable moments together. While the former World Number 1 had been away from tennis during the latter half of the previous season and the start of this season, she made sure to spend quality time with her daughter.

Yesterday, Serena won her opening round match at the National Bank Open in Toronto. During the match, her husband, Alexis Ohanian and daughter Olympia were present in the stadium to cheer for Serena. Later, the 23-time Grand Slam champion shared her thoughts on the presence of her daughter.

Serena Williams left surprised as she spots her daughter during her match

During the post-match press conference after her opening round win in Toronto, Serena was asked about the presence of her daughter in the stadium. She said, “You know, she’s never like sat at my match so I was super excited. I looked over, and I saw her in the first, middle of the first set and I was like, oh my god. Why is she here? And then I went into mom mode like, does she have on her sun cream like and I was like, okay Serena, should I say something like take her upstairs to the suite because she never like, she’s never been to my match.”

Further, she added, “So, it’s kind of cool that it happened in Toronto but I didn’t expect it but I was like, okay Serena. Just let go and enjoy this and you know it was good for her to have that memory. I mean, it’s pretty cool, and she’s never had it because I’ve always kept her away and I’m so happy that she came out there and so it’s good.”

Talking about the advice she receives from her daughter before her matches, Serena said, “She doesn’t give me a lot of advice before the match because you know, she just has a lot of fun. This kid has a lot of fun but honestly it was really cool and I was like I’m really happy and then I was like, okay, no racket smashing, stay calm.”

Serena’s journey ahead at the National Bank Open

After her first-round victory over Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Diaz, Serena will face the winner of the match between Belinda Bencic and Tereza Martincova in the second round. If she manages to move past the second round, a potential clash with Naomi Osaka will await Serena in the third round.
