‘Not Being Top Dog Gives Me..’ – When Serena Williams Bluntly Told Chris Evert About How Her Own Hunger to Win Made Alexis Ohanian’s Presence Irrelevant

Fans have often seen the American entrepreneur, Alexis Ohanian, accompany his tennis star wife, Serena Williams, during her matches. Ohanian was regularly spotted in the stands during his wife’s last Grand Slam competition. The Reddit cofounder was also there with Serena when she won her 23rd Grand Slam title in Melbourne in 2017.

Like many tennis enthusiasts, legendary American star, Chris Evert was also intrigued by Ohanian’s presence during his wife’s tournament. Thus, Evert once asked Serena about her husband’s influence on her Grand Slam victory.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion, Evert was also there to witness her compatriot as she won the Australian Open in 2017. Evert also saw Serena Williams’ husband in the stands as he was cheering for her. The former tennis player then asked Serena, in an interview for ESPN, whether her husband’s presence influenced her brilliant performance in Melbourne.

However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion had a blunt response to her question as she stated, “I don’t think so; I just think I was really just calm,”

Serena was not affected by her husband’s presence during the Grand Slam tournament. The American tennis legend further stated that she was confident about her massive victory in Melbourne. She further added, “Something about not being top dog gives me … something to strive for. Not that I didn’t have that motivation before, but it just makes me even hungrier.”

In 2017, following her triumph at the Australian Open, she expressed her gratitude to her friends, family, coach, and fans. The American legend even thanked her agent, Jill Smoller. However, Williams didn’t mention about her husband during the post-match speech in Melbourne which surprised many fans.

Even the ESPN commentators, Chris McKendry and Chris Evert, were surprised after Williams ignored her husband. As a result, McKendry asked the newly crowned Australian Open champion why she ignored her biggest cheerleader during the tournament. Williams answered hilariously as she stated that she often forgets to mention people during her tournaments.
