“Not Gonna Repeat What Steffi Graf Said” – Polish Tennis Player Iga Swiatek Responds to Fan as He Proposed for Marriage

Another feather has been added to the cap of the current World No 1, Iga Swiatek. The 21-year-old Polish player, won her 8th WTA title of the year, by clinching the San Diego Open, defeating Croatia’s Donna Vekic. 

However, during the trophy ceremony at the San Diego Open, there was something funny that took place. As Iga Swiatek got hold of her crystal trophy and acknowledged the crowd, a random fan from the crowd proposed to her for marriage.

World No 1 Iga Swiatek responds to a cheeky fan proposal

Early in the match, Swiatek’s overpowering performance was again the highlight of the three-set affair. The Polish player breezed through the opening set, winning by a score of 6-3. Later, Vekic bounced back to win the second set by 3-6. After suffering a little setback, Swiatek quickly recovered and dominated Vekic in the deciding set.

But during the post-match presentation, a fan from the stands yelled in Polish, “Will you marry me!” With a smile, Iga Swiatek responded to the fan by referencing what Steffi Graf had said, more than two decades ago, and replied, “Okay, I’m not gonna repeat what Steffi Graf said, but… You probably know what she said.

Regarding the Steffi Graf incident, she once got the proposal from a fan, during one of her matches at the 1996 Wimbledon Championships. The 22-time Grand Slam winner took more than 10-15 seconds and responded in a funny way by saying, “How much money do you have?” In return, the crowd was seen laughing at that incident.

Swiatek joins this special list of elite players

It’s safe to say that Swiatek has had an unforgettable year. She won eight singles titles before reaching the WTA Finals, including the French Open, and the US Open. Tennis experts have proclaimed her to become one of the greatest players of all time after witnessing her incredible play on the court.

To date, she is only the eighth player since the year 2000 to win eight or more WTA singles titles, in a calendar year. In 2002, Martina Hingis accomplished the feat. Afterwards, Serena Williams won in 2002, and 2013. Next, Kim Clijsters won in 2003, and 2005, and Justine Henin did the same in 2003,  and 2007.
