In a world where even the world’s most popular celebrities suffer from self-doubt, tennis icon Venus Williams recently shared her personal experience with “imposter syndrome” soon after her sister Serena Williams’ brave admission of the same issue. The 42-year-old tennis star, renowned for her resilience and skill on the court, opened up about the inner turmoil she has faced throughout her remarkable career in an emotional conversation during a podcast.

Prior to her, Serena Williams spoke about having two “Venus Williams” in their family while candidly talking about her imposter syndrome issue. Now, it’s Venus Williams’ turn herself. The Williams sisters’ courage to face their weaknesses is a potent reminder that imposter syndrome is universal and can strike anybody, even those who seem to have it all.

Venus Williams has years of experience and exceptional talent, but she has struggled with self-doubt, wondering if she really belongs where she is. Venus Williams recently launched an AI interior design platform named Palazzo. She has previously talked about her multiple degrees in fashion and interior design. However, she did not continue with it and chose to pursue a career in tennis. Years after this decision, her own interior designer initiative program filled her with self-doubt. Referring to this, she said, “I’m working with a new AI company for interior design. I’m thinking, Should I really be here? I mean, I have a background in interior design.”

“And then I had to fundraise for the first time. This was a nightmare for me. And oh, my god, like the anxiety and the issues go, it was horrible. And that’s the moment where I understood imposter syndrome.” Venus Williams further spoke about the discomfort that she felt during the events that led her to identify the issue. Her confession follows her sister Serena Williams’ earlier admission in the public eye that, despite her unmatched success in the sport, she struggled with similar feelings of inadequacy.

Serena Williams’ candid confession of her off-court struggles

Even though Serena Williams is one of the best athletes of all time and has won multiple Grand Slam titles, she acknowledged that she experienced imposter syndrome herself. “There were two Venus Williamses in our family,” Williams said, recalling the internal conflict of growing up next to Venus Williams in her quest for self-discovery.

She continued by saying, “It was crazy… My parents would make me order first, but once she ordered, I’d change my mind. It was tough for me to stop being Venus and become the person I am.” Williams conveyed a sound message about the value of self-acceptance and honesty to aspiring athletes and individuals alike through her vulnerabilities.
