‘Not to Stray Too Far’ : Roger Federer’s Former Coach Opines on Serena Williams’ Off-Court Stint

Serena Williams’ quest to win the 24th Grand Slam title will continue this year at Roland Garros, as the American pulled out of the ‘happy slam’ this year following the advice of her medical team. Serena is waiting to be back on the tennis court and begin the hunt to win big titles once again.

Ahead of her comeback, Tennis Channel had a discussion with Roger Federer’s former coach Paul Annacone over Serena’s chances of clinching a major title. Paul was all praise for Serena and mentioned that she doesn’t have to play another match to prove her greatness.

Let’s think about it. 23, she’s been on that number of majors. She doesn’t play another match, it doesn’t matter. She has done so much. Internally, I think with great players, they got to figure out why they want to keep playing. She is such a competitor. She wants to get that no.24″.

Talking about Serena’s off-court engagements, Paul was glad that she could take her mind off tennis for a while and hoped for the American to bounce back stronger.

All those things outside the court for her are great way for her to kind of decompress and hit the reset button for a bit. But, at the end of your career as an athlete, you have to be very careful not to stray too far that way. Because the longer you go, the longer it is to get back there. I think her and Patrick know exactly what they want to do. There is no reason she can’t continue to play great”.

With the rise of several young talents on the WTA tour over the past few seasons, it has become difficult for experienced campaigners like Serena Williams to win consecutive titles. But, her immense experience will always be of great help in handling critical situations on-court.

If Serena can manage to steer through the season without getting injured, it can be safely assumed that the 23-time champion will end up adding a Grand Slam title to her name.
