Elena Rybakina made a strong return to the court after a back injury and a split from her former coach, Stefano Vukov. She missed the Asian swing but showed her resilience at the WTA Finals. Despite losing two of her three group matches against Jasmine Paolini and Qinwen Zheng, she delivered an impressive performance by defeating top player Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. This victory came after nearly two months off the court. Just a day before her first match, Rybakina announced her partnership with Goran Ivanisevic ahead of the WTA Finals. Sam Sumyk thinks it’s a revolution!
This coaching move raised eyebrows since Ivanisevic is known for coaching ATP legends like Novak Djokovic, Marin Cilic, and Tomas Berdych. Coaching Rybakina marks his first venture into the WTA circuit. In an interview with Tennis Majors in November, he explained, “After Novak, it’s really hard to coach anyone, so I needed something completely different. When you’re the coach of the greatest player of all time, you just need something new. So the choice was some young player or something completely different, and this ’completely different’ was the WTA Tour.” Goran isn’t alone in this transition.
Sam Sumyk, who previously coached Garbine Muguruza, moved from the WTA to the ATP circuit a few years ago. He understands the differences in training styles between the two tours. As 2025 approaches, he believes Rybakina’s new coaching relationship could benefit both her and the WTA as a whole. Speaking to Tennis Majors on December 11, he shared his thoughts on Goran’s shift: “I don’t know why. But I’ve bumped into Goran (Ivanisevic) here and he’s going over to the girls. That’s great because it’s time to see more and more real coaches on the women’s circuit. I told Goran, it’s great.”

Having coached Djokovic from 2019 to 2024 and guiding him to 12 major titles, Goran sees potential in Rybakina as well. He believes that with proper guidance, she could add more titles to her resume. Sam expressed hope for a long-term partnership: “I hope it works out.” However, competition is fierce in women’s tennis now more than ever. As Sumyk noted, there are more “real coaches” on the WTA circuit.
No. 2 player Iga Swiatek has teamed up with Wim Fissette, who previously coached Kim Clijsters and Naomi Osaka. Coco Gauff has found a new coach in Matt Daly, formerly of Denis Shapovalov’s team. Even Naomi Osaka will work with Patrick Mouratoglou, who was once Serena Williams’ coach. The top players in the WTA are gearing up for fresh starts in 2025 with these high-caliber coaches. As Sumyk stated, “The more coaches there are, the higher the level will be among the women. I’m talking about real coaches…and then I think the level will naturally rise.”
