Overruling Affirmative Action

Affirmative action is a policy that aims to increase employment and educational opportunities for those who are underrepresented in society. When hiring, such programs take into account an individual’s race, gender, religion, or national origin. The Supreme Court dealt a huge blow to affirmative action in higher education on Thursday. They struck down race-conscious admission programs at Harvard and the University of North Carolina.

The high court’s majority of six justices determined that the universities discriminated against white and Asian American applicants by implementing race-conscious procedures that favored candidates from underrepresented backgrounds.
