Coco Gauff is gaining momentum as the 19-year-old has reached her second grand slam final at the US Open. The beginning of this season did not turn out well for her. But now she is turning the tables as she played fantastically in the American tournaments in the last month. Although she has improved by quite a bit, Gauff still carries one regret related to her idol, Serena Williams

While Gauff carries some regret related to Williams, she looks up to her regardless. Both sisters have been her idols ever since she was a child, and they persist to be her role models as she goes to play in the US Open final.

Coco Gauff on regret with Serena Williams

Gauff has powered through in the US Open and reached the semifinal as she beat player after player. She is now into her first US Open final, which many would call the continuing legacy of American tennis. However, the American sensation does not follow the same pattern of thought. She talked about it in the post-match conference after she won her semifinal bout against Karolína Muchová.

I don’t think I’m carrying American tennis. I don’t think I will. We have so many compatriots who are doing well. Serena is Serena. She’s the GOAT. I’d hope to do half of what she did. But I’m not gonna compare myself to her. She’s someone I look up to.”

In addition to not being compared to her, she talked about the regret she has when it comes to the younger Williams sister in her life.

She further said, “Being in the same stat line as her means a lot to me. She’s my idol. The only regret I’ll have for the rest of my life is not being able to play her.. there were so many tournaments where if we won an extra round & didn’t lose, I would’ve played her. I’m still happy to just be a product of her legacy.”

After a lousy start to the year, Gauff has turned her season around. Stepping into the Citi Open, she won her fourth title, and then she won her first master a few weeks later. The momentum has launched Gauff to new heights, and she will now play in her second slam final. Now, she has a good chance to claim a slam lift herself to victory.

She is set to face Aryna Sabalenka, and the match between the two will be one to watch. Who will take the big prize home? Will Gauff manage to win her first slam in her country like Williams?
