American tennis legend Serena Williams did the unthinkable when she clinched her 23rd Grand Slam title while she was pregnant in 2017. Later in her speech, Serena had a few people to thank. However, her then-fiance and now husband, Alexis Ohanian, was missing from the list. Later, Serena explained why she chose to omit her fiance.

With her triumph in Australia, she went past the 22 Grand Slam tally of former German tennis star Steffi Graf. She also became the most successful tennis player in the Open Era.

 

Serena Williams gave her reason for omitting Ohanian’s name

After her record, 23rd Grand Slam title, Serena thanked her coach, her family, her agent, and the tournament director of the Australian Open. However, her then fiance, Ohanian, was not on the list, which made Chris Evert curious. She asked Serena why he did not make it on her list.

Serena replied, “I always forget people. After 20, 30 years, I’m still forgetting…I like to keep it simple because in the past people get angry, people cry. I’m like, listen, I’m only going to thank my coach, my hitter, my right-hand guy, (agent) Jill (Smoller).”

Although it might look strange, Serena thanked the people who helped her with tennis. Be it her family or the other people she thanked, they all had something to do with tennis.

When did Serena meet Ohanian for the first time?

The 41-year-old recently retired from professional tennis. After bidding goodbye to her favorite sport, Serena took time to appear in the ‘Drew Barrymore Show’, where she discussed various aspects of her life and career. She also narrated a few interesting incidents that entertained the fans. One such story was about her first meeting with her husband, Alexis Ohanian.

Serena recalled that after winning a match she went inside her car to leave for home when she saw this six-foot-five-inch tall man inside. At first, she thought he was a security guard. Serena instantly questioned her agent if she has a stalker. Because of this, they arranged security for her.

However, her agent Jill clarified that he was Alexis, her friend. The story was hilarious and everyone present at the show, including Drew, burst out laughing.
