With 73 singles titles under her belt, Serena Williams has undoubtedly carved out an unrivaled legacy in women’s tennis. However, a great deal of challenges are inevitable even in the illustrious journey of one of the greatest female athletes. One such massive obstacle for the former tennis ace was her battle with imposter syndrome. For the uninitiated, this syndrome manifests as self-doubt regarding strengths, skills, and accolades among high achievers like the ‘Queen of the Court’.

Just like Serena, the American tennis prodigy, Coco Gauff is also struggling with the ‘imposter’ experiences during her competitive journey. Reminiscing about her past experiences, the 19-year-old player recently made an honest confession about her fraud syndrome at the US Open.

Coco Gauff gets candid about her struggles with mental health

During her participation in this season’s Madrid or Stuttgart Open, the young WTA sensation previously revealed that she was struggling with the imposter phenomenon. Despite having three singles titles in her bag back then, Gauff was still having self-doubts about her on-court prowess and performances.

In light of her previous revelations, the 19-year-old was recently asked whether she has managed to overcome the syndrome or it has become a part of her journey. At her press conference at the US Open, Gauff said, “Yeah, I think it’s still a part of me. I think it’s something I’m doing better with, definitely. Even after D.C., you know, I still was like, well, you know, I beat some good people but maybe I caught them on off days (smiling).”

Even during her massive Cincinnati Open victory against Iga Świątek, the world No. 4 was having doubts about the stellar display of her game as she thought that the Pole was on an off day. Though she is struggling with imposter syndrome, the tennis prodigy has now come up with her own way of dealing with it.

She also said, “I’ve been trying to speak more positively of myself and actually telling myself that I’m a great player.”

The WTA sensation has made it clear that the syndrome is now a part of her but she is trying to give herself more credit.
