American tennis legend Serena Williams will play her last tournament in Flushing Meadows before her retirement. The 40-year-old has amassed a plethora of records in her illustrious career. Owing to her prowess in the game, Serena has earned quite well. The 23-time Grand Slam champion once opened up about her spending habits in an interview.

Apart from the prize money she earns from the tournaments, she has also invested in various business ventures. However, it’s strange that the former world number one spends a little on herself.

Serena Williams is a boring spender

The American accepted in an interview that she is a boring spender and that she often forgets to pick up her prize money from tournaments.

“I never, never picked it up, so at the end of the year, the tournament directors would literally hand me the check because I would never go get it,” said Serena.

Further, the 23-time Grand Slam champion also admitted that she rarely spends money on herself. “Really bad at treating myself, I am learning how to treat myself more. I am working on it. I’ve thought about some jewelry,” she added.

Serena, however, is a brilliant business investor. She runs her own fashion apparel brand, ‘S by Serena‘. Also, she owns a venture capital firm called ‘Serena Ventures’, which invests in budding enterprises of people from minority communities all over the world.

Serena to start her US Open campaign next week

The ‘Queen of the Court’ is gearing up for her last tournament. After early exits from the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Masters, the hopes are not very high for the tennis veteran. However, playing in her last Grand Slam in Flushing Meadows, Serena certainly will have a lot of support.

The 40-year-old will start her campaign on Monday, 29th of August. She will play against Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in her tournament opener. If we have a look at her draw, the former world number 1 will have a tough task in front of her. If she manages to win the first round, the 40-year-old might be up against Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, the current world no.2.

Further, the legend also has a chance of meeting last year’s runner-up Leylah Fernandez in the fourth round. If she manages to reach the quarterfinals, her opponent could be the Wimbledon finalist and her doubles partner at Eastbourne, Ons Jabeur.
