‘Really Unfair’ – Alize Cornet Lashes Out at Disrespectful Crowd for Booing Her Amid First Retirement of Her Career at French Open 2022

French tennis player Alize Cornet didn’t have a great day at the French Open 2022 today, as she lost her match against Qinwen Zheng in the third round. Sadly, she had to retire from the match with tears in her eyes.

However, one unfortunate incident happened as she was walking off the court. The French Crowd started booing her after retirement. It is worth noting that she had a heavy bandage on her left thigh before she decided to quit the match. But the crowd reaction hurt her more than the retirement, according to Cornet.

In today’s third-round match, Cornet’s opponent, Zheng was playing really solid tennis, as she won the first set by 6-0. After the first set, she called the trainer to check on her left thigh, as she was visibly upset. After treatment, she tried to continue, but failed miserably. Three games in and she decided enough is enough, as she hugged her opponent to end her run at the French Open.

After the match, she talked about the crowd’s reaction, as she said, “The whistles almost hurt more than the injury, when you see what I’ve been giving on the pitch for all these years it’s really unfair.” (Google Translate)

Notably, she never retired before in a Grand Slam tournament, which was even disheartening for her. In the tournament, she showed great form, as she won the previous rounds to please the French crowd. Now, after her loss, the French Open will not have any French players in the second week of the Grand Slam event.

Zheng will face Iga Swiatek in the next round

Meanwhile, after beating Cornet, Zheng will face Iga Swiatek in the fourth round of the French Open 2022. The Chinese player has played some great tennis in this tournament as she beat the 2-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep in the previous round. Now, she will face the current world no.1 Iga Swiatek.
