Martina Navratilova or Martina Hingis?

In one scene of the show, Chandler and Monica are playing tennis against Chandler’s boss and his wife. The episode was ‘The One With Chandler’s Work Laugh’. It shows Chandler pretending to play bad so that his boss does not feel insulted. However, Monica is not aware of what’s happening and plays to win. Chandler, mad at her for not pretending, screams ‘Martina’ at her.

This scene is a lot more interesting once you realise Matthew Perry was a top-ranked junior tennis player in Canada. BTW can someone explain this joke to me? Chandler says "Okay, easy Martina" to Monica after she brags about beating the other team

But it was not clear who Chandler was talking about. This sparked a huge debate in the comment section of the post asking who it was Chandler was referring to.

Following the theme, another user said that since Navratilova is the most revered figure in tennis, people would think that it was her. But Hingis being more popular at the time the episode came out, it meant that the player the episode was referencing was Martina Hingis.

Since the media perception of Navratilova was an ‘unlikable winning machine’, a user felt that she was the one being talked about in the scene.

Whichever tennis player the scene was referring to, Hingis and Navratilova both probably showed off to their friends that they were talked about in the show.
