‘Seems Like a Safer Bet Right Now’ – Serena Williams Addresses Ukraine Conflict’s Impact on Bitcoin and Crypto Currency

Serena Williams has undoubtedly been one of the greatest tennis players the world has ever seen. However, apart from being a tennis player, she has also been one of the most successful athletes turned entrepreneurs. Recently, the champion raised an inaugural fund of $111 million for her venture capital firm ‘Serena Ventures’.
Starting in 2014, Serena Williams till date has been an angel investor in more than 60 companies, through her firm.

Post her fundraising round, Williams, along with her partner Alison Rapaport, recently appeared in a financial TV show. During the show, both the ladies spoke about a variety of topics related to the market, their firm, the fundraising round, etc. However, in between these talks, what came out as a special topic was cryptocurrency.

Being a successful businesswoman for the past 9 years, Serena Williams is well versed in the ups and downs of different segments of the business industry. Speaking to CNBC television, Williams was asked about the latest move in Bitcoin due to the crisis in Ukraine.
A confident Serena took up the question with grace as she asserted not being surprised by the move. She said, “Yeah, it’s not surprising to see that happening because it’s a way for investment. It’s an investment in the future. It feels a little bit more safe right now with everything that’s going on in the market. So, to have something in the cryptocurrency space, it just seems like a safer bet right now.”

Williams has been associated with cryptocurrency for a long time now. Even though Serena has been a lone investor in several crypto firms, she has also invested in several crypto companies with her husband Alexis Ohanian. Expressing her views on getting into the crypto space through ‘Serena Ventures’, Williams said, “Yeah. You know what, I saw the market a little bit earlier in crypto. For me, it was really just about you have to really think out of the box when you are into VC.”

“Especially in things we invest in, in terms of technology and things of that nature. So, seeing some of that, I wanted to dig my feet a little bit. I didn’t dig it as much as, you know, looking in the past, wanted to now. But it was good. So for us, we have a good kinda lead going into that journey of cryptocurrency as well as Web3, is what a lot of people are saying now and using and how we want to try to get into that space over at ‘Serena Ventures’.”
Fundraising of Serena Ventures
In 2014, Serena Williams started her capital investment firm ‘Serena Ventures’. To date, the firm has invested in over 60 firms, of which 13 are unicorns. The company has a 33 billion market cap portfolio.

After reaching the heights of success in the gone years, ‘Serena Ventures’ yesterday, 1st March 2022, closed its first round of funding. Being a valuable company for long, Serena’s firm raised $111 million in the inaugural fundraising round.
