Former tennis champion Martina Navratilova has openly criticized the decision-making of WTA CEO Steve Simon in selecting Cancun, Mexico, as the host for the WTA Finals. Navratilova’s comments came after several top players, including Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Rybakina expressed concerns about the playing conditions at the event.

The 59 Grand Slam titles winner questioned the timing of the decision to hold the tournament in Cancun, particularly during the rainy season. She highlighted that it was an unwise step taken in an already hazardous state of affairs. “It shouldn’t have come that late in the year, making this decision. Ultimately, Steve Simon has been the boss for 9 years, and here we are… to come to Cancun in the rainy season? You cannot be hoping it’s not gonna rain at a premier event for the WTA Tour. You have to own the bad decisions you made and make some choices after that,” Navratilova stated.
