There’s a special buzz when a teenage talent takes the tennis stage. Serena Williams once did it, Coco Gauff followed, and now 17-year-old Iva Jovic is carrying the torch. Fresh off her first WTA triumph at the Guadalajara Open, the rising American star not only marked a major milestone but also caught the attention of Serena’s childhood coach, Rick Macci, who hailed her as the real deal.

On Monday, Jovic became the youngest player to win a WTA title this season by beating Emiliana Arango 6-4, 6-1. She grabbed the crown at 17 years and 283 days, edging past Mirra Andreeva, who was 17 years and 299 days, as the youngest champion of 2025. And there’s more history. Jovic is now the youngest American to clinch a tour-level title since Coco Gauff lifted a trophy in Parma back in 2021!

Rick Macci wasn’t about to stay quiet after watching the 17-year-old’s fearless fight. The legendary coach took to X with high praise: “Iva Jovic age 17 is the real deal as mentally is cut from a different cloth. On top of that she hits the ball clean and can control time. Top ten is by year end 2026 and once there a permanent fix. @WTA”

Iva came into Guadalajara ranked No. 73 in the world and walked out soaring to a career-high No. 36. Not bad for someone who began 2025 way down at No. 206. On court, she showed nerves of steel, converting six of 11 break points while saving six of nine. That grit carried her past a stubborn Colombian rival.

This final promised a brand-new champion, and it delivered drama. Iva Jovic’s opponent was Emiliana Arango, who already played her way to a final earlier this season, falling to Emma Navarro in Merida. This time, it was her body holding her back. Illness hit hard, even forcing her to get sick on court. Still, she kept fighting with all she had, especially in that tense first set.

Arango, down 5-3, refused to fold. She saved three set points and then broke the American’s serve to claw back. In the very next game, she worked her way to a 30-15 lead, just two points from leveling the set, but the starlet shut the door. The second set kept the tension alive as three games dragged to deuce. Iva even had to save three break points in her opening service game. Once she steadied, though, she took full control.

Arango’s fight didn’t go unnoticed. Jovic made sure the Colombian’s effort got its due. “You showed so much fight and gave the people a show,” she told her opponent. “It’s not easy to start out on tour when you’re young … but people like Emiliana make it easier and always have a smile on their face.” The words hit just as sweet as the trophy in her hands. And it’s not only Rick Macci cheering her on.

Is Iva Jovic the next Serena Williams, or is it too soon to make that call?
