Serena Williams Explains How Losses Have Made Her a Better Player

Professional sports, especially tennis, have shed a much more sincere light on the mental health of athletes recently. Many influential players and individuals have spoken about it openly, including Naomi Osaka and Mardy Fish. Tennis ace Serena Williams also highlighted her views about it in a recent virtual event she attended with Prince Harry and BetterUP CEO Alexi Robichaux.

The trio discussed various aspects of mental health and also gave some guidelines to overcome the same. Prince Harry focused on maintaining the balance between outer (professional) work and inner (self-care) work.

Serena also commented on self-care for better mental health. She said, “Boundaries are so important to have. If you don’t have boundaries, you aren’t going to reach what you can do. Don’t send emails at 11 pm. You will burn out.”

The former World No. 1 insisted that everyone should take time for themselves. No matter the situation, “me” time is important for self-care and betterment of mental health for everyone.

Serena Williams on how much she hates the word “losing”

The 23-time Grand Slam winner also talked about how she hates the word “losing.” She said, “When it comes to losing, I hate that word, I want to coin it a growing experience. As much as I hate it, I have learned so much. Losses are important, learn from them.”

She considers “losing” as a learning experience for her, to work on her mistakes and improve on them. It comes as no surprise, then, that Serena has enjoyed such an illustrious career.

In the virtual event, Serena Williams spoke positively about self-care and later thanked Harry for solving all her problems through BetterUP. “Harry is always solving all my problems. You are just always figuring it out for me,” she said.
