Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams, is a prime figure when it comes to social media platforms. By co-founding Reddit in 2005, Ohanian took the community-led platform to new heights. As he left his creation in 2022, Ohanian has more time to discuss other platforms which are coming up. Threads, Meta’s venture, is a brand new platform which will take on Twitter. Recently, Ohanian talked about a crucial point which might end up giving Threads the advantage over Twitter.

In classic Ohanian fashion, the Reddit co-founder shared more news about social media platforms. Even on the move, Ohanian could not help but talk about new ventures in the social media scene. Threads went live to compete against Twitter. Ohanian gave a lengthy explanation as to why the new platform might prove to be superior.

In a video he shared on Instagram, Ohanian started his message by giving his hot take on the platform. “All right, everybody’s been asking me about Threads. Hot take: I like it, I signed up for it (you’ll notice Seven Seven Six got an account there too) and it’s a bold move by Zuck exploiting the weakness of Elon in this moment.”

He further said that the platform could turn out to be better. He explained that when a new platform comes up, they need to give incentives to users on the existing rival platforms to switch. Which further makes it a hassle for existing creators to move on to the new one. Since some new platforms have no basis, they eventually die out. But with Instagram as the base for Threads, they have a heavy advantage.

Popular users on Instagram can move on to Threads, and a small chunk of their fans will follow them to the new space. Now, Instagram has the audience, and has the creators. Overnight it was able to on board a bunch of people who have an incentive to now create content on Threads because they have a following on Instagram. Some portion of those followers are gonna come over to this other platform.”

The big question, as Ohanian poses, is that if creators can sustain the following with text-based content. While talking about Threads, Ohanian also praised it for having a comment sorting section, like Reddit.

Now that the Instagram service is live, Twitter has already threatened a lawsuit against it. If it goes to trial, who do you think will emerge victorious?
