“carry me off in the stretcher” – Williams sisters’ retirement jokes

The elder Williams sister shared a video on her YouTube account discussing motivation and how small things motivated her and her sister. Talking about it, she described a typical joke she routinely tells the 23-time Grand Slam champion. She said, “Serena and I used to always joke that in tennis we would say carry me off in the stretcher but I’m going to do what it takes to win and we would always say that we were on a stretcher and we’d be like doing the peace sign right before we expired but whatever it took and that’s the attitude you got to have in life.”

The sisters have several inside jokes with each other, and the ‘carry me off on a stretcher’ expression also shows their motivation on the court. Now that one sister has retired and one is close to retirement, one would expect the jokes to reduce, but they are not going anywhere.
