…just hanging out with my girls and spending time with them and just showing up every day is an achievement, and it’s not easy. I can’t think of anything else that I achieved that’s better or greater than that,” Serena Williams once said, proud as a mother of two little angels. The 23-time slam queen has fully embraced her motherhood after hanging up the racket in 2022. Time and again, she’s expressed how much she’s “obsessed” with daughters Adira and Olympia. As a mother, Williams has also been making sure that her children grow up knowing what the most important human values are.

In Allure’s The Body+Mind issue that came out in January 2019, the 23-time Grand Slam title winner opened up on how she had been teaching her daughter, Olympia, what true beauty means. “When I tell her she’s beautiful, I want to teach her that she’s beautiful from the inside. Giving is beauty. Being kind and humble is the ultimate beauty,” she said. Olympia was just under two years old at the time. Today, she is seven. And as she has grown, she has only proved that her mother has been doing a good job.

On May 24, Williams shared a post on her official IG account. It featured a heart-melting picture. The mother was seen hugging Olympia tightly. It was a moment filled with pure love and bliss. Expressing her gratitude for having Olympia as her biggest support, William simply wrote, “Mama’s need love too. Go hug someone you love today!”

This emotional moment between the mother and daughter ended up leaving Serena’s half sister, Isha Price, in tears. Failing to resist her feelings, she simply shared “❤️🥹❤️” in the comments.

But then again, it’s actually not the first time that Williams’ 7-year-old baby has comforted her. Remember how seven years ago she exhibited a similar gesture? Her emotional support truly helped the 43-year-old forget a big on-court setback.

When Olympia comforted mother Serena Williams after a heavy loss at the US Open

The 2018 U.S. Open was really a challenging campaign for Serena Williams. She found it hard to be calm on the court. Especially during the summit clash, where a young Naomi Osaka eventually outplayed her. The then 20-year-old won the trophy at the Arthur Ashe stadium with a score line of 6-2, 6-4. More than Osaka’s triumph, perhaps it was Williams’ outburst in the match that caught everyone’s attention, due to a controversial umpiring call.

The heated moment erupted after the chair umpire, Carlos Ramos, said that he witnessed a code violation from Williams’ trainer. It happened in the second game of the second set. As a result, Williams received a warning. But she wasn’t convinced and told Ramos, “I don’t cheat to win,” reported ABC in September 2018. “I would rather lose.”

Williams continued to argue with the umpire while accusing him of questioning her spirit of the game. “I have a daughter and I stand for what is right,” she said. “I have never cheated.” When she slammed her racket in frustration after losing the fifth game in second set, the umpire termed it a second violation. It eventually cost her a point. She then continued to tell Ramos to apologize to her. But when she called him “a thief”, he handed her a third code violation. This led to an entire game penalty for Serena.

Alongside the feeling of defeat, Williams was eventually left broken emotionally after this match. But fortunately, she had an angel by her side to comfort her. The mother later revealed, during an interview, how Olympia provided a much-needed emotional support. “I got in the car, and Olympia was in the car,” she said, as reported by Today in September 2018. “It was so weird. She started giving me kisses; she never gives me kisses. She doesn’t even know to give kisses, and she just grabbed me.”

Williams felt as if her daughter, a year-old back then, knew that she was upset. “I was like this little baby is so smart,” she remembered. And guess what? Olympia’s magic seemingly worked!
