Serena Williams shares a tidbit of her mindset from her days as a pro
On September 16, Venus Williams gave fans a little sneak peek into a special sister moment at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She posted a clip from the podcast on X with the caption: “Growth starts with honesty & owning who you are. More to unpack here. Stockton Street with @serenawilliams and me launches tomorrow on @XOriginals! 🎙️” The clip showed the two legends talking about the mindset it takes to rise to the top, and it was pure gold.
Venus dropped some wisdom that stopped Serena in her tracks. “In sport, to be a champion, you have to have brutal honesty. If you’re not honest with yourself and completely open, you cannot hide from yourself. You can’t pretend, you can’t shut that part off,” she said. That line hit hard. Serena Williams, sitting right across from her sister, agreed without hesitation.
Then came Serena’s own candid reveal. She opened up about the tough, unfiltered conversations she once had with herself: “‘You were too big, and you needed to be lighter, and you needed to have an opportunity to run faster,’” she said. “I mean, those were the talks I had to have with myself later. But you have to be honest with yourself, right? If you can’t, no one else can.” It was a rare moment of honesty about the sacrifices and brutal self-checks behind her 23 Grand Slam titles.

Serena Williams also reflected on how she once struggled with body image. Especially under the glare of media commentary about her appearance. Back then, she was known for her fearless power and playing style, but she still faced criticism off the court.
Today, though, she’s turned that story around, learning to embrace who she is and pushing body positivity forward. With their new podcast dropping tomorrow, all eyes are on the Williams sisters. The big question: what other secrets and stories will they share next?
