Billie Jean King is one of the most influential players in tennis history. She is one of the major reasons that the WTA came into existence, and women’s tennis could reach its current value. However, she has encountered many obstacles in her life. Many have chastised her ventures as she often went the opposite of the convention. Recently, one of her books went under review in Florida due to certain aspects which made one parent angry.
King first came out as a lesbian in 1981. While it was frowned upon during that time, her openness paved a path for several others not to hide themselves. One such player was Martina Navratilova, who took inspiration from King’s bold move.

Billie Jean King book under fire
A book on King’s life recently became a hot topic and went for a review under administration in Florida. The book is found in three libraries and authored by Brad Meltzer, and talks about her life. One page of the book contains details about how she fell in love with her wife and when she married her. The details about the event irked a parent, which prompted them to lodge a complaint to the administrators.

While the status of banning the book is still under discussion, the news has raised many eyebrows. Meltzer has vehemently opposed the idea that his book contains sexual material and needs to be banned.

King also talked about the situation and said that she was saddened by the news. She also said that she was big on inclusion and people following their heart; therefore she wants everyone to be welcoming.
“I think it’s sad,” King said about the controversy of her book. I’m very big on inclusion, everybody being their authentic self. If you heard my personal journey, which I thought I was straight, I realized later in life I wasn’t. I had to figure out who am I, who is my authentic self. Going through that journey just for me personally, the important thing is to be welcoming to everyone.”
