Navratilova and Nelson were together for seven years. Judy Nelson had two sons from her previous marriage who were 9 and 12 when they got together. In an old interview, she explained the nature of their relationship and said, “We shared custody with my husband and they traveled with us to tournaments in the summer holidays.”

She talked about the new information she got from her sons. She said, “When I sit down for a beer with the boys, I hear things I never knew about at the time.”

“I think they had to defend my honor a few times,” she expressed her unawareness about it.

However, she did not downplay Navratilova’s contribution to her sons’ lives. She said, “The celebrity factor didn’t help me but it did for the boys. Martina was a hero to them.” She added, “She was cool to know, and she loved to play games with them. In many ways, she was their best friend.”
