Patrick Mouratoglou recalls how Serena came back after a near-death experience
Serena made her return to the clay court after a difficult time dealing with her injuries. She had an ankle ligament in the year 2010 which needed multiple injuries. Just as things started to better, she suffered from pulmonary embolism, a clot that stops blood from entering the lungs. This was probably the worst experience of her life so far as she did have a face-to-face battle with death. This was a near-death experience for her. However, post multiple surgeries she came back with a fighting spirit.

“Serena had ruptured ankle ligaments in 2010. She had one surgery but then needed another because the first had not gone as well as had been hoped. Early in 2011, she was rushed to hospital, having suffered a pulmonary embolism. She could have been dead within a day. After a subsequent break, she had started playing tournaments again but had not won another Grand Slam title. So here she was at Roland-Garros…” writes Patrick in his book.
When many thought that she would take her time off the court and would rest for a while after her surgeries, she surprised everyone with a sensational return to the clay court with the hunger to want more from herself.
