“She Feels the Pressure”: Patrick Mouratoglou Opens Up on His Experience of Coaching Serena Williams

Serena Williams has thoroughly dominated women’s tennis in the last couple of decades. Serena has clinched 23 Grand Slam titles, the record in the Open era. Currently, she has taken a sabbatical from tennis because of the hamstring injury she faced at Wimbledon 2021.
Patrick Mouratoglou, in a recent interview, talked about the journey he has had with Serena. Mouratoglou has been coaching Williams for the last 10 years. Under his direction, she has won 10 Grand Slam titles as well as several WTA titles. He also highlighted the responsibilities that Serena carries since becoming a mother.

In a recent interview, Patrick discussed his partnership with the former World No. 1.
He said, “We’ve been through an incredible journey, winning 10 Grand Slams, being number one in the world for three and a half years in a row and she’s been through a lot. She has had a baby, she feels she has this extra responsibility.”

Further, he continued, “And you see how many more women that are playing tennis and that are competing at the highest level, thanks to the doors that Serena and Venus opened. So yes, she feels the pressure, but also there is nothing better than to feel like that you’ve been able to inspire a whole generation of players.”
Mouratoglou highlighted the fact that Serena faces extra pressure as now she’s a mother too. However, both Venus and Serena have inspired millions of tennis players across the globe, he added. Indeed, it’s difficult to overstate the impact that Serena has had on the WTA tour. Her brilliance on the pitch, as well as her charisma off it, has helped elevate the game to a bigger stage.

Williams’ hamstring injury
Serena Williams played her last professional match at Wimbledon 2021. In the opening round itself, she suffered a major hamstring injury in her match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Following her injury, Sasnovich received a walkover. On the other hand, Williams was absolutely gutted to bow out of the tournament she had entered as a favorite.
