Coco Gauff’s remarkable success at the US Open stunned the world like nothing else. Everyone had high expectations from the 19-year-old and she did nothing less than coming through for all her fans. Even the people who had their doubts about her short-lived success were shut down after her first Grand Slam win. Now, one of Serena Williams‘s old rivals – one who defeated the legend in the Round of 16 when Serena was Wimbledon‘s defending champion – has hailed the young teen sensation.

Needless to say, after Gauff became the first American teen to win a Grand Slam after Serena Williams, a lot of comparisons were drawn between her and the 23-time major titles winner. Now, Marion Bartoli, the former French tennis player and Grand Slam winner, felt that there was quite a connection between Coco Gauff’s success and Serena Williams’ legacy.

Bartoli also added, “Of course, it’s a big gap between winning one and winning 23, but I just think she has a complete package. She thinks like a 30-year-old even though she’s 19.”

In fact, Marion is not the only one who thinks Coco’s success represents symbolism for Serena. Serena Williams’ former coach also compared the two after Coco’s momentous victory at Flushing Meadows.

Serena’s former coach Rennae Stubbs spots an unusual similarity too

After Coco’s win, Rennae Stubbs said that when Coco talked on the court, everyone screamed and cheered for her. She said that she had not heard people scream like that for someone other than Serena Williams. Further, she also added that Coco has an amazing personality, and she is very mature for her age.

That is because, in her winning speech, she recognized the efforts of Billie Jean King for equal pay and also paid tribute to her idols, Venus Williams and Serena Williams. To recognize the weight of tradition and carry it with grace is certainly the hallmark of a star in the making.
