Current World number 14 Jelena Ostapenko has some advice for players in the WTA as well as players who have just started playing the sport. The Latvian star mentioned how she looks up to Serena Williams, who she believes has shown others how to be different.

Jelena Ostapenko won the French Open in 2017 and became the first Latvian player to achieve such a feat. She has also come close to winning several titles and is on track to reaching the top ten again. Hence, we can safely say that she knows how to become a top player in the professional circuit.

Jelena Ostapenko’s advice and admiration for Serena Williams

The former world number 5 recently interviewed with CLAY Tenis in Qatar. She answered a variety of professional and personal questions in the interview. During the interview, when asked whether tennis needed players that were more like her, she had a lot to comment.

Ostapenko answered that some women are too similar, and they try to act like others. She believes that everyone has to be special and themselves in order to succeed. She gave the example of Serena Williams and said that she has a big personality. The Latvian added that Williams wears crazy outfits, and knows how to cause an impact on how she dresses on and off the court.

“I think some girls are maybe too similar and they try to always be the same like the other ones. I think everyone has to be special, everyone has to be themselves,” was Ostapenko’s advice for players.

She further talked about who she took inspiration from, as she said, “I love characters like Serena, such a big personality she is. Even the way she dresses on the court. Sometimes she wears crazy outfits but it looks really good. Good on her, she knows how to impact people.”
