Caroline Wozniacki has been on a mission ever since she announced her return to competitive tennis. In 2023, during an interview, she revealed the main purpose of her return. The former world number one stated, “I want to show my kids that you can pursue your dreams no matter your age.” After a rollercoaster return, she recently sealed a hard-fought victory against the former no.3 Elina Svitolina in the first round of the Bad Homburg Open. However, more than the result of the match, the caption used by WTA on their social media post while giving an update on this epic clash has now become the talk of the town!
Caroline Wozniacki was thrilled to seal her first victory on a grass court since the 2019 Wimbledon Championships. Speaking about successive interruptions during the hard-fought battle she stated, “Yesterday we played in the sun, then in the dark, and then court got a little bit slippery and I unfortunately fell.” She required an off-court medical timeout after that in the third game of the final set.
But the X post from WTA has been off-putting for many, “Mom on a mission. @CaroWozniacki fights her way into the second round after an incredible match against fellow tour mom Svitolina!” After seeing this post from the official X handle of the WTA, fans have come out in numbers to accuse them of a lack of creativity.

With this victory, Wozniacki has now managed to close the gap a little bit with Elina Svitolina in the H2H (Currently it’s 5-2 in favor of the Ukrainian). This match was full of excitement, emotions, and entertainment and if anything was lacking in this match, it was – controversy. Well, tennis fans made sure the tennis world doesn’t get deprived of anything surrounding this epic clash!
Tennis fans lash out at WTA for “recycling this mom on a mission stuff”
A fan came up with four instances when WTA chose the same way to congratulate the super moms on the Tour. If we take a look at the timeline posted by that fan, they wrote a similar caption “Mom on a Mission” while announcing Wozniacki’s progress into the second round of the 2024 AO.
Then, in February, it was the same caption used during a post that was related to Naomi Osaka. In March, they reframed it a bit stating, “Mothers on a mission” while highlighting the progress of four moms into the third round of the Indian Wells. Even in June, they followed the same tradition while congratulating Osaka’s progress to the next round at the Libema Open. “We get the damn point,” the fan said.
Wozniacki is a mom?
(please retire the phrase "mom on a mission" we as a society have moved passed the need for that) https://t.co/e0yZ1Xv8wi pic.twitter.com/CeK5ba4831

WTA’s social media posts have raised a lot of eyebrows over the past few months. In March this year, tennis fans brutally slammed the WTA admin for a major blunder at the Charleston Open announcement. This time it’s not a blunder though but fans accuse them of showcasing a lack of creativity with their social media posts. A fan expressed his frustration by stating, “Take a shot every time the WTA uses this exact same caption.“
Caroline Wozniacki gave birth to her first child on 11 June 2021 and then, almost a year later she gave birth to her second child. The road to comeback hasn’t been easy for the former world number one. All she wants now is to accomplish her goals on the court and bring back her days. Reminding her fond memories on the court another fan highlighted, “Please STOP recycling this mom on a mission stuff we GET IT. This is a former world No.1 and GS champ she’s more than someone’s mom.”

She has won 30 titles in her career so far including a Grand Slam triumph at the 2018 AO. Fans feel calling them out with other names rather than highlighting their extraordinary feats is a bit “exhausting.” The fan wrote, “The obsession with using “Mum/Mom” to describe these talented players is exhausting!“
Elina Svitolina also gave birth to her first child, Skai in the same month as Caroline Woznaicki’s baby boy. Both of them were born in October 2022 in just a few days gap. Highlighting their same passion for the sport and maintaining an equal balance between personal and professional lives a fan wrote, “They are both moms, just say “mom on mom crime” or “only one family will eat tonight“. Surely this isn’t the result that the Ukrainian tennis star would’ve wanted, but Wozniacki showcased an enormous resilience in this match.
