SHOCKER: Angelique Kerber Upsets World No.5 Elina Svitolina at the Cincinnati Open 2021

Angelique Kerber defeats Olympic bronze medalist Elina Svitolina at the Cincinnati Open. She beat the Ukrainian 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round and booked a place for herself in the third round. The match went on for two hours and 11 minutes and Kerber has found her rhythm going.

Both players looked very strong as they won a set each in the beginning. However, Kerber looked more commanding in the final set and broke Svitolina’s serve to clinch the win.

Elina Svitolina vs Angelique Kerber: Set 1

Angelique Kerber showed great strength and courage to force a comeback against World No.5 Elina Svitolina. The German went down in the first two games, however recovered soon and won three games on the trot. It was a fan fest of breakpoints as both players were getting points on the opponent’s serve. Kerber converted four out of the five she received whereas Elina converted three out of the eight.

Angelique emerged as the stronger player as she took the game till the last set. She played some beautiful shots and broke Elina’s serve to win the set 7-5. The World No.21 found her rhythm going as she played for the first time since Wimbledon Championships semifinal this year.

Svitolina vs Kerber: Set 2

Elina Svitolina was quick to redeem herself and won the second set with ease. She beat Kerber 6-2 in what appeared to have started off as an even contest. Both players were serving well for the first games. However, Svitolina broke Kerber’s serve in the sixth and eighth game to clinch the set.

She improved her serve this time and did not give the German any chance of dominating. She converted 13 out of the 15 points available on her first serve. She also won 17 out of 23 points on her service. It was a comprehensive win for the Ukrainian which took the tie till the final set.

Svitolina vs Kerber: Set 3

The final set started off with both players hustling for the win. However, Kerber broke Svitolina’s serve in the seventh game and took the lead immediately. A comfortable lead in the eighth game saw her sitting in the driver’s seat.

Kerber won the game 6-4 despite Elina trying to make a comeback in the 10th game. However, the German did not let loose and did not allow her to break her serve. She moves onto the next round at Cincinnati.
