Legendary American tennis player Serena Williams has been quite busy since retiring from professional tennis; attending fashion shows and promoting her new children’s book. Recently, she appeared on the Tonight Show, where she had a brief talk with host Jimmy Fallon about planning her retirement.

In that interview, she revealed not telling about her retirement decision to anyone except only one person. Additionally, she talked about feeling relieved after releasing her retirement essay in Vogue.

Serena Williams talks about taking her retirement decision

While talking to Jimmy Fallon, Serena revealed, In the beginning, I literally could not tell anyone and I write about it in the magazine, in ‘Vogue’. The only person that knew at one point was my therapist, because verbalizing it meant that it was real. I don’t want it to be real. So, you know, I was not quite sure, like What I was gonna do. And I don’t think you really know until you say it or until it’s actually real.

In the interview, Serena talked about feeling really stressed out and ‘miserable’ about the article coming out in Vogue magazine. However, she had a surprising experience after letting the world know about her retirement.

“When it came out, I was actually relieved, and I did not expect to feel that way. I felt good. Yes, I felt pretty good… It’s like when you want to accomplish something and you don’t do it and then when you finally do it, it’s like ‘oh it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was’ and that’s kind of what it was like. I should have done it 10 years ago! I’m just kidding (laughs),” she further said.

Serena’s last dance at the US Open 2022

Earlier in August, Serena announced that she was going to retire after the US Open. After her sudden announcement, the tennis community was taken by surprise at first but later hailed her as one of the greatest of the game, if not the greatest.

In the US Open, her run came to an end in the third round when she lost to the Australian player, Ajla Tomljanovic, in three sets. Before that, in the second round, she beat world no.2 Anett Kontaveit to get her biggest win of the season.

Apart from that, she also took part in the doubles tournament with her sister Venus for the last time in their career. Unfortunately, the Williams sisters lost in the very first round. After Serena lost her third-round match, she gave an emotional speech to say her final goodbyes to her adoring fans and expressed her gratitude to her family.
