World No.2 Simona Halep is really training hard for the upcoming season. After having an impressive 2020 season, she is certainly willing to take her aspirations to a new level. Interestingly, it is her coach Darren Cahill who is trying his best to help Halep lift his third Grand Slam title in Australia.
In a recent interview, Halep talked about why he picked Cahill as her coach. The Romanian player won her first Grand Slam title under him in 2018. After working for 4 years together, Cahill decided to take a break to give some time to his family. However, Halep again announced Cahill as her coach in 2020.
“I chose Darren because I really like his teaching skills,” began a confident Halep. “The way he talks, the fact that he got me. He understood my nerves, my personality. And, he tried to kind of change me but in my own style. To make me realize what’s not good within me.”
Halep certainly believed that Cahill was someone whom she could trust blindly. She said that he understood her as a person which was really important.
The world No.2 also revealed an intriguing tale about herself. She said that she didn’t use to joke earlier. However, Cahill helped her open up to more people with his good humor.
“His jokes relax me a lot. I didn’t use to joke. Before I met him, I believed if I was at work on the court, I should be inaccessible to everyone. After he joined the team, his jokes, his Instagram photos and all helped me open up,” added the Romanian player.
Halep further said that Cahill was able to develop a relaxed environment around her.
“He kind of introduced me into a very relaxed environment. And, he helped me out on the court a lot. I play very good matches when I’m relaxed,” concluded Halep.
There is definitely a great tuning between Halep and Cahill. The Australian has earlier coached Andre Agassi and Lleyton Hewitt in his career. He will definitely want Halep to match their levels and excel in the upcoming season.
